National Military Appreciation Month: Honoring the Legacies of Veterans Interred in the Arizona Veterans’ Memorial Cemeteries
PHOENIX – The Arizona Department of Veterans’ Services (ADVS) is asking for the public’s support during National Military Appreciation Month (May) and Memorial Day to help the agency recognize and honor Arizona Veterans who have been laid to rest at the three Arizona Veterans’ Memorial Cemeteries operated by ADVS.
“Stories of Our Heroes” is a new monthly feature by ADVS aiming to carry on the legacies of our Arizona Veterans interred at Southern Arizona Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery in Sierra Vista, Arizona Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery at Marana and Arizona Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery at Camp Navajo.
The new initiative launched in February on the ADVS social media pages and website, but will need the collaboration of family members to contribute their memories, stories and photos of their loved ones who have passed on.
“It is important to continue to say and remember the names of the Veterans who have passed to recognize those who have served our country, with no questions asked,” said Judy Dillman, administrator for Arizona Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery at Camp Navajo (AVMC-Camp Navajo). “This is important for those who may have not gotten the recognition they deserved for their military service."
Since the launch, ADVS has featured the lives of three Veterans from WWII, Vietnam and the Persian Gulf.
