Gerardo “Gary” Ochoa is the Deputy Director for the Arizona Department of Veterans’ Services (ADVS) and has been a member of the department since 2008. Following his retirement from the Marine Corps as a First Sergeant, with 22 years of honorable service, Gary joined ADVS as a Veterans Benefits Counselor. Additional billets held include Southern Region Manager, Assistant Deputy Director for the Veterans Services’ Division, and ultimately his current role as Deputy Director.

As an accredited Service Officer through the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, Gary passionately advocates for Veterans and their dependents, representing both ADVS and the American Legion. In his current position, he provides executive oversight for all divisions within ADVS, including Veterans’ Services, Administration, Finance, Public and Intergovernmental Affairs, and the Arizona State Veteran Homes in Phoenix, Tucson, Yuma, and Flagstaff. Gary is also an active member of several Veterans’ Advisory Committees, Veterans’ Service Organizations, and serves on the board of Luke5Adventures.

During his military career, Gary held key billets both stateside and overseas, including roles as Anti-Tank Company First Sergeant, HMH-466 Squadron Gunnery Sergeant, Alpha Company Drill Instructor and Senior Drill Instructor, Recruit Training Regiment Operations and Training Chief, and Systems Administrator and Data Analyst for various aircraft squadrons.

Gary holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice Administration and a Master of Science Degree in Leadership from Grand Canyon University. Some of his military decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Gold Star, and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with Gold Star.
